Lovage
(Levisticum officinale)

Description

The lovage plant, which can grow to be 2 metres high, does best in moist soil. In Dutch this plant is also called “Maggiplant” because its taste is reminiscent of Maggi soup seasoning. In spring, umbels with greenish-yellow flowers appear. Over time, these flowers change into ribbed fruit (often called seeds).

Origin

Lovage comes from Germany and the Netherlands.

Did you know?

The seeds, which are sweeter than the leaves, are used in the preparation of liqueurs. The cosmetics industry also uses the seeds, particularly for perfume.

An infusion of the seeds, the leaves or the dried root has a diuretic effect, and reduces rheumatic complaints. In addition, lovage has an appetite-inducing effect and assists digestion. It also helps for flatulence.

Some discourage its use during pregnancy.

Quality

An evenly coloured green leaf with a light underside is an indication of good quality.

Uses

Seeds can be used for the seasoning of salads and mashed potato. The leaves can be steamed and eaten as vegetables.
